I’m Sorry, But I’m Good At It

Hilly had another great idea. She’s good like that what with being creative and artistic and extremely cute. Maybe that’s more annoying than anything else, but she asked that we participate in A New Kind Of Valentine’s Day.

vdaypourelle

It’s not that I hate V-Day. I just don’t put stock into it because as I sit here typing there is something on the news about Valentine’s Day so Kennimus turns to me as he’s putting on his socks and mumbles, “Happy Valentine’s Day“. See? It means so very much to us. It’s the pressure that gets everyone. The same thing goes for New Year’s Eve. It’s as if we need to have the MOST. FUN. EVER or else we’re losers for some reason. Thanks, but I add enough pressure to myself on a regular basis anyway.

What I Like About Myself

Even though it can turn around to bite me in the butt, I like the fact that I’m good at apologizing. When I’ve offended someone or hurt them I don’t hold on to the fact that I’M RIGHT and YOU’RE WRONG. Most times I am quick to realize how what I’ve done is hurtful and then tell the person I’ve displeased that I’m sorry. It’s not an empty apology either because I tell them what I’m sorry for so that they know I’m sincere.

There are times when this turns around on me and bothers me because I expect the same from other people. For example, the times when people apologize like this: I’m sorry you feel that way. If Kennimus is anywhere in vicinity he will bellow “Oh, hell no. Take cover! That was the dumbest thing you could have said! Beware the Wrath of Kelly when you make a lame ass apology!

On the other hand, I’ve been known to yell, “You owe me an apology!” to people when they continue to tell me WHY they’ve done something instead of acknowledge the fact that I’m wounded by them. Making excuses as to why we’ve hurt other people isn’t acceptable though I’m learning to allow people to apologize on their own. Hard as it is to admit, but this is a lesson for ME and not them so I must continue to make amends when I’ve been hurtful. I like this about myself because it means I practice humility and care for others.

Now, I’m supposed to ask you to leave me a comment on what you like about me and try not to get the song “What I Like About You” by The Romantics stuck in your head. Oh, dear. I think I just did that and you’re going to end up singing it all day. I’m so sorry for doing that to you just now, but look at it this way: you’ll irk everyone around you with your cheery singing!

Like how I practiced apologizing just now? Told ya I was good at it.

I like your honesty, grit, determination, sense of humour and the way you explain something to me WITHOUT making me feel like an idiot. I like that you are waaaaaaaaaaay smarter than me and don’t lord it over me and make me feel inferior. I like the way you lick me when I least expect it ;-)

In a much better mood since I decided the diet was a bad idea and ate myself stoopid :)

Mmmmm carbs and sugar are my friends an oh how I missed them!

I LOVE your sense of humor. It’s quirky and hilarious. I love that you really seem to care what your readers have to say. And I think it’s great how you let you personality come through. I’m learning a lot from you about that. Happy V Day :-)

You are the kind of person I wish was related to me and/or lived close. You’re warm, and instantly made me feel at ease at BlogHer. You’re intelligent, kind and sincere. There are no airs about you and you’re exceptionally funny too.
Also, go watch the preview for Meet the Robinsons (skip the intro if you want) - the lady with the patches TOTALLY reminded me of you! Ha ha ha!

What I like about you? I’m still laughing at the phrase “teacher bladder” from yesterday’s post. Snicker. And our doctors wonder why we get more bladder infections than the general population!

Wow, that is an awesome trait to have. Do you know how many people fail and simple apologies? You rock!

What I like about you is the way your writing tells a story. I am always riveted by your words and the fact that your perfect grammar doesn’t take away from the thrill of the tale. I am a grammar snob so that is not a put down, btw!

Thanks for joining in, even though you put about as much stock into today as I do!

I like a lot of things about your writing. I like the way you describe your relationship to your kids. But also you’re pretty. It’s fun to look at goofy pictures of pretty people.

Having actually had the pleasure of meeting you in person, I can say that you are an incredibly nice person and infectiously so. It’s hard not to be happy around a person who has as great a smile and attitude as you do.

I like your commitment and concern for kids (not just your own). I like your humor and your willingness to share just about anything.

I like the fact that you picked “What I Like About You” instead of “Talking In Your Sleep.”

    Oops.

    I shouldn’t have said that.

I stole this idea, except the comments part, I’m not ready for that yet. :)

What I like about you is your beautiful soul. Regardless of the fact that we’ve never met in person, your true self shines through your writing and I feel the love you hold deep in your heart. It doesn’t matter what topic you’re discussing, the love is there and it’s vibrant and magical and addictive. I always want to be a part of those feelings and I always come back for more Kelly. You are a kindred spirit in a way.

That’s what I love about you.

    Happy Val Day, Kelly!

Yeah, I hate that “I’m sorry you feel that way” comment too. A few of my (now ex) boyfriends have tried that stinker on me and have learned the hard way that it’s like adding wood to a fire.

Hmmmm….what do I like about you?

You love coffee and tea - which shows that you are A Woman of Exceptional Good Taste(tm).

I like your love of language and your playfulness. It’s like you live in a rumpus room of words that you’re constantly exploring, which is the best kind of relationship to have with language in my opinion.

I like that, even after a year of us knowing each other, you still put up with me when I’m being silly, obnoxious and/or bratty. Or when I (inadvertently or otherwise) hog your comments. ;-P

And I love that you share my love for music and give great suggestions for songs and artists I need to check out. You even occasionally make me mixes…of course I may never get to listen to them if Little Latte keeps “borrowing” them or you keep forgetting to mail them…*ahem*

Did I mention about you putting up with me when I’m bratty? Oh good.

I also like that you are passionate about books and freedom of speech…you’ve inspired me more than once to get off my tookus and DO something with my blog that might educate people about those subjects.

Most of all, I like you because you’re my bud. What else is there to say, really?

I wish I could respond to everyone here, but my time is, once again, limited. The lady with the caffeine patch is so me and I laughed for a good 20 minutes after watching it. Was that Joan Cusack? I love her. Talk about quirky…

Thanks everyone. You said the lovliest things. I didn’t expect all that. I though it would just be “Well, you shower daily and use deodorant. I like that about you.”

  18. Karen Said,

    February 15, 2007 @ 8:08 am

But that would be lying. All your caffeine patches wouldn’t stick if you showered EVERY DAY.

I like the fact I can send you a begging email for advice from here in the UK and you offer a response at your first opportunity (thanks for that it was sound information and padded out my personal statement beautifully!) I like the fact you share you life with us all, and open yourself up to being commented upon. My god if I’d a put a post up like this I’d of fretted all night that no-one would write anything nice, so I like the fact you put yourself up for such a possible outcome! Ultimately I just like ya!
