And I tell them no, you may not call your mom from my (college) office and no, I am not going to interrupt this meeting so you may consult with your parent. If we can't work out the problem together there's a problem, and while I respect the role of family in anyone's life, I know my job well enough and take my responsibility to my students seriously enough that you WILL be able to navigate your issue on my campus without your parent's help.
