Thanks for the great book recommendation, I will definitely check it out.

I'll return the favor by recommending my new favorite, socially conscious rapper, Tha Truth (http://www.myspace.com/thanonconformists)

Dude raps about Howard Zinn, y'knowwhaddImean?

I was just thinking about my summer trips to the library yesterday, now that I'm in my last week of summer vacation. My mom used to drop me off there for a couple of hours each week while she ran errands that I didn't want to go on or sit in the car and wait for her while she did them.

I still remember what shelf the Nancy Drews were on. I can tell you exactly where the Steven King books are. I knew the librarians by their first names. I still remember how the library smelled.

When we moved into our house three years ago, I had boxes upon boxes of books that I brought with me - some acquired from living in our apartment but quite a few from my parents' house. We wanted to re-do our family room and get new bookcases before unpacking those books so they sat in boxes for 2.5 years. When we finished the room this past winter and got the bookcases, I spent the better part of a day unpacking all those books, looking at them, flipping through them, and placing them in their rightful spots on my new shelves. I love looking at them, remembering where in my life I read them and how many times.

Now my house feels like a home.

I have heard the author on NPR a couple times in the past few weeks and am so intrigued by his story. As the white mother of two African children they'll have to walk that walk between two worlds. I have the book sitting on my pile of books to read and I can't wait.
I also wish there was more discussion of the hip-hop that is good and meaningful and not the headline grabbing kind.

Post some of your favs for us would ya?

I would actually like some hip hop suggestions. I like most music (including country, Meg) but have never really gotten into hip hop because I hate the gangsta crap.

I'd be interested in hip hop that's actually, well, decent.

Signed,

I'm going to have to look into this Really Rosie business--seems I missed out on something good, there. And thanks for the book rec--I'll be adding this to my summer reading list (which is quite short, and I welcome more suggestions!).

And is this the place to confess that I 've started listening to country music? If we're making musical confessions and all...

Oh, dear sweet baby sister. I will send you that book PRONTO now because you have totally dug into our Really Rosie past and SANG IT. And because of that and the fact that it's not even 7 am and the fact that there was nothing else in my head this morning I can see that I will be singing it all. damn. day.

I'll probably sing "Eatin' chicken soup with riiiiiice" a litle, too.

You're welcome on the red wagon thing. I was probably just really bossy and big sister-y to you anyway.
