The Cuban

by Mocha Momma on March 31, 2011

Today is The Cuban’s birthday.

He is teaching my great-niece to decorate her face with table decorations that read “Kelly”. These two are big trouble when they’re together. Plus, he’s a sucker for a pretty little girl.

He’s 45 and I have no problem just putting that right out there since he was fine with throwing me a party that included giant “40″ balloons. (Although, I am totally looking at you, Mallory.)

Maybe I shouldn’t spend his birthday writing mushy blog posts about how much I love him and maybe I shouldn’t spend all my time listing the reasons we are good together. But that’s why I have a blog, right?

Blogging, in fact, brought us together. He read my blog and I read his and we became good friends. Well, eventually. That took some time because he didn’t want to have anything to do with me at first. A mutual friend tried to get us to talk and he told her that I was too full of myself. I think what he meant to say was, “She’s awfully confident.” so I just ignored that fact and decided to be myself with him anyway. After lots of talking and deciding that this was NOT a good idea because we lived too far away, we threw all that out and worked it out. Long distance dating led to him moving here and finally looking for a house to share.

Basically, it looked like it wasn’t going to work, but we did it anyway.

He is a voracious reader with a wicked vocabulary (oh, so sexy!), he does all the cooking (yes, please and thank you), and he threw me the best birthday party I have ever experienced. He is the best thing that has happened to me in a long, long time. I can’t even tell you. I’ll let Ray LaMontagne do it for me.

A few of the lyrics which, when I hear them, make me think of him and why he is the kind of person I want to come home to at the end of the day:

Now both of us have known love before,
To come on up promising, like the spring, just walk on out the door.
Our hearts are kind and are hearts are strong.
well, let me tell you what exactly is on my mind.

you are the best thing
you are the best thing
you are the best thing
ever happened to me

I’ve typed out something half a dozen times, each of them equal parts right and wrong so I’m going to stop trying to convey how thrilled I am that you both are together, making each other deliriously happy. Instead I’ll say what a wonderful birthday message this is, Kelly, and I hope you both have a spectacular evening with each other.
*hugs*

Happy Birthday to The Cuban–who has made you so very happy.

Gush away–things work out for the best when they often look like they aren’t going to work out at all.
