Cirque du Soleil’s “Ovo”

by Mocha Momma on July 5, 2011

The last person in the world who should be reviewing a Cirque du Soleil show is me. Most of what I want to say about it is wow and amazeballs and holy god they are some limber people. It would end up being a rather amateur critique. But I’m going to do my best here. I shouldn’t have read other reviews of it first to see what other people are saying because I disagreed with the ones who complained about certain things. I’ll get to that in a minute.

Morgan played along and put on a mask.

Before I get to that I have to say that I looked for the perfect video to embed for this post and I keep coming back to the same one that doesn’t even show any action from the show. It’s just a song. My youngest son, Morgan, accompanied me to the preview show at the United Center in Chicago and he insisted that we purchase the music CD that they sold and this is my favorite song. So, just click and play it while you read. You’ll be shifting in your seat before you know it.

The show, themed with a colorful ecosystem filled with bugs of all kinds, kept us smiling the entire time. The characters, or insects, crawled around the circular stage in awe of a mysterious egg that shows up and how they respond to it. There is a love story for a few of the insects and I would be remiss if I didn’t mention how dang sexy that show is. All of the Cirque shows I’ve seen (I’m up to three now. Look at me! Like a world traveler of cirques!) have a sensual feel to them in the movement and music and how the bodies of the gymnasts/acrobats move. As I sat and watched the show and looked over at my son I wondered if he recognized how sensual it was but I can’t imagine that he missed it. He’s 16 now so I’m sure he didn’t. For how beautiful it is, I actually hope that he didn’t miss it unfolding in front of him.

Morgan took a picture of with a mask, too. Can you see the horns? Those didn’t come with the mask. I had them originally.

Ovo is as energetic and imaginative and creative and bright as the other shows I’ve seen. It is noisy and quiet at the right moments. To say I liked it is an understatement. At the end of the two hour show Morgan and I agreed that our cheeks hurt from all the smiling. My problem, from watching all the fanciful bending and twisting and flipping about is that when I’m done watching a show like “Ovo” I come home and want to do backbends and do flips in the air in my backyard.

Morgan said I would look good in this Cirque jacket, but I decided against it. Now that I see it again I want it.

But don’t worry. I’ve stuck to just riding my bicycle and taking leisurely walks with The Cuban and our dog. No scars yet.

The bonus of my trip was that Heather happened to find out that I was very close to her as she visited Chicago so we ran over to her hotel after the show so we could visit. THAT was a special treat.

Have you seen a Cirque du Soleil show? Which one? How would you describe it? I’m asking because this was hard. I just wanted to say I LIKE IT BECAUSE IT WAS SO COOL. No one is going to ask me to write critiques again very soon, are they?

I love Cirque du Soleil shows. I have seen two (I can’t remember which 2-my memory isn’t what it used to be. I can’t wait to take my kiddos when they are a little older. They are breathtakingly beautiful.

Great review! and I have to agree “amazeballs” just might be a new fav word of mine….

I just saw “O” at the Bellagio in Las Vegas with my mom. It was AMAZING!!! The stage was a pool & stages & people came up out of the water & disappeared into the water. They had flying boats with trapeezes. OMG we LOVED it & would do it again.
