Since this is my second Sounds of Blackness song, I figured I would at least give a little bit of history about the group. They’ve been around since 1969 when they were formed as a college ensemble group. Because of that, the group has had an ever-changing lineup of singers and musicians attached to it. Russell Knighton and Gary Hines have been the two directors (Hines having taken over in 1971) and artists like Ann Nesby have been affiliated with the group in its long run. They span many musical genres like gospel, R&B, and jazz but I fear they still aren’t too widely known. I’m not sure how I even learned of them except for growing up listening to 107.5 WGCI in Chicago.
This song, “Everything Is Gonna Be Alright” has been a major theme song for me at difficult times and whenever I hear the phrase of this title I can’t help but start humming their tune.
