Polka Music Makes Them Do Weird Things

by Mocha Momma on October 10, 2011

I have tried not to bore anyone with our photos from our family vacation to Galena last weekend, but I can’t keep this one to myself.

We had a plan to do several things while we were away from the hustle and bustle of daily life like we’d never have done if we were stuck at home. Being the planner that Mallory is, she made a list of things to do like boating, horseback riding, and visiting local historic places. If we did half the things she wrote out on her list, we still would have had a great vacation. Instead, the first night we were there we learned that Oktoberfest was going on while we were there so our plans got re-worked to allow for that. Mostly because the local Lions Club puts on Wiener dog Races.

Wiener. Dog. Races.

I want that to sink in because we just about fell out of our chairs from the excitement. They also had a wiener dog parade, they crowned a king and a queen wiener dog, and there was a costume contest. FOR THE WIENER DOGS. It was fantastic and, somehow, Morgan walked around the park and got in the wiener dog race because someone’s partner didn’t show up to let the dog go when the whistle blew. After that, we went to this giant tent where a polka band played music and there were polka dancing lessons.

And then…and then, Morgan took off on us again (this has been a problem his whole life and it drives me crazy so I’m grateful that child is now a huge manly man looking fellow at 6’4) and went out on the dance floor with this woman who must have been about 80 years old and she was teaching him how to waltz. We were all gobsmacked to see him doing this so never got a chance to catch it on camera or film. When he came back to the table he told us that he asked her to dance since he had been watching her with her grandson (in full-on lederhosen with his hipster chunky glasses) and he wanted to learn from her so he walked right up and asked her to dance.

He asked her to dance.

I can only imagine that a 16 year old boy asking an 80-something year old woman to dance a waltz must have made her day.

But instead of posting video of that, here is Mallory and Mason doing some weird dance moves to polka music. You can hear The Cuban shout out moves to them like “milk the cow!” and “make the cheese!” and, for reasons unknown to me, they did it.

Enjoy.

Waltz is magic.
If you can at all manage it take a vacation to San Francisco between thanksgiving and christmas and dance at Fezziwig’s dance party at the Great Dickens Christmas Fair.
Magic.

That is the sweetest story ever. It’s so cool when our kids surprise us. I love it!!!

Sound like so much fun. Crazy family times. Is there anything better, in the entire world? I don’t think so.

Wait. You have Polka Music there? (Ha ha. KIDDING. I’m just glad to hear Chicago style polkas and not the oompa stuff!) Your kids are awesome.
