This Should Be My Halloween Costume

by Mocha Momma on October 27, 2011

I’m working on being better at posting regularly over at Babble Voices, but this month is almost over and it’s kicking my tail. I did manage to write about my awesome students over there today. Click HERE to read it. It’s called “Kids Today”. Here’s a little snippet:

So, when I hear that kids aren’t smart enough or innovative enough or that they are, god forbid, “lazy” (one of the WORST words in the vocabulary of the education system) I have to argue that point. This year, we have some crackerjack little 6th graders who have come to us from the 24 elementary schools in our district. Not only are they hard workers, they are compassionate and come from families that want to be involved in their education. But it’s the kids who are most impressive.

In other news that is too awesome to pass up, Jenny (The Bloggess) liked my Red Dress photos so much that she made me into a vampire. First, here is the original:

That was just too normal so this is me just having finished a little snack (a rodent, perhaps?) (no, wait. a kitten.) and, even though it was impossible to improve upon Matt’s photography THIS makes me a little slap happy.

Think of this as my Beyonce/Sasha Fierce transformation. If she can have two personalities, so can I.

The comments on the initial post I wrote about the Red Dress experience has overwhelmed me. I hadn’t expected that especially because I still felt, as a writer, that I was holding back some pretty serious things. What encouraged me the most were the irrepressible and compelling arguments people made for embracing my ridiculous life and giving up on the notion of “normal”. For that, I say thank you a thousand times over.

Normal people wouldn’t put the above picture in a frame on their desk for students, would they? Because that’s exactly what I’m doing.

I think I’ll keep on embracing my ridiculousness.

They’re both gorgeous. I would definitely show my students. Kids need adults to model that kind of cool and humor.

I think you could totally pull off that vampire look on a daily basis. Embrace THAT normal.

I cannot tell you how important I feel it is that students have examples to look up to of people being who they are. Being what makes them furiously happy. I’m so happy and, more importantly, impressed to find an educator that is being that model. Somebody that kids can see and know and talk to and with in their actual lives! I’m so giddy that I’d hug you if you were in front of me.
