With all this talk of snow pounding across different areas of the United States (Pennsylvania, Denver, New Jersey) this weekend I thought a Snow Patrol song was in order. But it’s more than that. It’s because I got an email from Mason telling me that he had some suggestions for my “Musica” section. When my kid lectures me because he hasn’t seen any musical choices on my blog I am going to listen up and take note.
For me, indie rock is a sometimes kind of music. Too much of it and I can’t think straight in my own head. For that, it gets a Thinking Music tag because it sets my brain in motion to pondering. Mason is like that. He doesn’t want to just go over the mundane stuff in conversation. He wants to ponder ideas and he asks probing questions because he is still figuring it all out. In the last year I noticed he’s been “getting” things we have discussed for years. Things are sinking in and taking hold and when he comes out the other side of this it’s going to be a magical thing.
This one’s for you, Mason, you great, big, deep thinker you.

How interesting. What are the things he is getting? Is there anything more fascinating than the super up-close experience of seeing a person develop like you get to as a parent?
I feel like a scientist. Of course, I wish I understood the science.
He’s making his mama cool–that’s something to appreciate!
I love those moments when my kids connect the dots between things we’ve been trying to teach them, and things that are going on in the world around them. The joy when my daughter says, “Oh!! I get it now!!” Or when my son gets thoughtful and frowny and then lights up and starts asking even more questions that show me he’s getting a real grasp on something that was only a vague possibility a few months before. I love watching them develop as people, watching them solving problems, growing, understanding, and connecting.
It’s a challenge, isn’t it?
